2018 Perodua Myvi : The Icon, Reengineered

Over the last 12 years, the Perodua Myvi is one of the most well-known car in Malaysia due to its affordable pricing, wide interior space and boot, and cheap maintenance cost. Whenever you walk around the street, you will find it everywhere. It can be owned by your parents, your siblings, your friends, and more.

The first and the second generation Myvi is essentially a rebranded Daihatsu Boon or Toyota Passo. Despite the fact that the second generation was also the same interpretation as the first one, it has a stronger engine than its JDM counterpart. As for the current model, the Myvi is now locally designed just like the Perodua Bezza.

Like the Perodua Bezza, the engineers of Perodua have revamped the previous generation Myvi platform for about 70%. As a result, it has a bigger wheelbase, wider and taller dimensions. Not to mentioned  that it has a better structural rigidity of 2.5 times of the previous model, making it a serious contender when it comes to ASEAN NCAP for having 5 star safety rating in frontal and side collision test. Also, stability iss improved with the new chassis as well as the suspension system for better ride and handling.

One of the most significant changes of the new Myvi is the upper body. As I mentioned previously, it is a fully localised car especially on the upper body for about 99%. Judging by the looks of it, the Myvi is no longer based on the Passo or Boon. Shall I say, it's a mini Toyota Auris/Corolla iM?

New to the Myvi is a standard LED headlights and taillights. The headlights have a Follow-Me-Home and auto off functions too.

Powertain-wise, the new Myvi comes with  two engine choices with Dual VVT-i depending on the trim level. The small 1.3 litre inline-4 1NR-VE is available in the base trim like Standard G and the X line. It has 94 hp and 121 Nm of torque. Meanwhile, the higher output 1.5 litre 2NR-VE produces 101 hp and 136 Nm of torque. All Myvis have electronically controlled four speed automatic transmission as standard, while a 5 speed stick shift is only available for the Standard G model. Plus, both engines get an EEV rating as it sips less fuel for about 21.1 km/l for the 1.3 and 20.1 km/l for the 1.5.

The 1.3 litre engine, found in the Standard G and the X variant.

The 1.5 litre engine that is found in the High (previously known as SE) and Advance trim.

Moving on to the interior, the Myvi has a driver-focused vibe interior especially on the dashboard layout. The dashboard has a gloss black finish trim all across and it has a digital air conditioning system as standard for all trims. Push button start is also preloaded alongside the keyless entry system. New to the interior is the charging port at the side of the driver seat whereby the rear passengers can charge their phone during a road trip. A leather-wrapped steering wheel is available for the X line and above while leather seats are available on the Advance model. Interestingly, the 1.5 litre model gets a built-in toll reader so you don't need to fork out RM120 for a SmartTag reader. Additionally, an infotainment system with Smartlink system for Android phone is only exist in the Advance model too.

As for safety, the Myvi has tons of it compared to its competitors. As most people are not pleased with the old one, the new Myvi gets 4 airbags (dual airbags at the front, two shoulder airbags at the side of the front seats) as standard for all models whereas another two additional side curtain airbags for the 1.5 lineups. ABS
with EBD, vehicle stability control,  traction control, hill start assist are also thrown in from the base model to the top trim line. Only for the 1.5 Advance model, the Myvi gets the Advance Safety Assist, which includes forward collision warning, auto emergency braking, front departure alert and pedal misoperation control. The system is monitored by two stereo cameras on the windshield. My oh my, this system is mostly in expensive luxury cars, and Myvi just rolling the dice and tell all cars that Myvi is one of the cheapest cars in Malaysia to feature this sort of safety feature.

Overall, the new Perodua Myvi is really a looker for new car buyers for everyone. Pricing starts around RM 44,300 for the Standard G with manual transmission, RM 46,300 for the automatic equivalent, RM 48,300 for the X line, RM 51,300 for the H line and RM 55,300 for the top of the range Advance model. Note that these pricings are not including insurance. Anyhow, I will post a test drive review of the new Myvi at the end of this month so stay tuned my fellow readers!
