2016 Volvo S60 T6: The forgotten Swede-mobile became bolder and kraftfull

In these days, there are many ways to make your life to be better and appreciated by people. Here are few steps to become one of the examples from the first sentence:

Step 1: Dieting and exercising.
Step 2: Be kind and friendly as hard as you can.
Step 3: Get a Volvo so you won't die in a terrible wreck and people will love you since the car looks minimal and bold over the Germans.

I'm just joking. Apparently, these tips might be true to you, but when it comes to car ownership, it depends on your ego. Better yet, just don't be a typical moronic and stereotype owner, no matter what car you're driving.

So for this post, I'm bringing you a close-up of the recently launched Volvo S60 T6.

The second-gen Volvo S60 was already on the road back in the year 2011 and facelifted last year. As for this year, Volvo Cars of Malaysia brought the T6 variant and ditched away the Ford-sourced powered T4 and T5 variant. The main thing about the S60 T6 was the new in-house built modular engine with twincharging technology (turbocharger and supercharger into one), known as Drive-E, and most importantly, adding two more safety features in the car, which I will talk about them later.

The one at the back was the T5.

As for the T6, there are no minor exterior changes at all. What you see was that it has the same 17" wheels. If it looks pretty lame for this Volvo, you may hit up some cash for the optional 18" wheels to make the ride better and providing better look on the outside. There was a Polestar Optimization Package for it as well.

The S60 might look a bit old for 2016, but it still looks great, if you choose the right paint and wheels.

Like I mentioned previously, the S60 T6 had a new powertrain that was derived from the XC60 and the new XC90. This one was powered by a 2 litre inline-4 with twincharging technology, by adding both turbocharger and supercharger into one engine known as Drive-E. This enables the S60 to run faster and unusual as it could go up to 306 hp at 5700 rpm with 400 Nm of torque between 2100 to 4800 rpm. With this new engine, more efficiency and power were added, and no signs of supercharger whine and turbo lag at all. Power is transmitted to the front wheels with an Aisin-made 8-speed automatic transmission. 0 to 100 was stated to be reached around 5.9 seconds and 230 km/h of top speed is achieved.

Plot twist: First production car with twincharging tech was the Lancia Delta S4 and the Nissan March Super Turbo.

Inside, there's not many difference compared to T4 and T5. All the navigation controls, radio controls, digital dash, gear knobs, BLIS reminder on each door panels at the front, were untouched. Except, there's two additional safety systems which was Lane Keeping Aid and Volvo Park Assist Pilot. These system aid the driver to avoid the car leaving its lane in some situations and helping you to assist parking in both reverse and side parking respectively. Both of these were guider by radar around the vehicle.

Paddle shifters, available for all Drive-E and T6 variants

See that speed limit that located in the middle of the dash? That was actually the speed reminder. It knows every speed limit with the help of the camera behind the windshield. When the camera detects the speed limit sign at the side of the road while the car is moving, it immediately captures the sign and displayed the following speed limit to the dash. Occasionally, it's useful in school zones, or even better, the gruesome and evil AES zone so you don't wanna pay RM150 to each speed trap that you've exceed. The digital dash also warns you when you feel tired via the steering sensor if there is an unintended steering input from your hand by displaying the coffee icon.

The dash can be customized depends on your vibe by using the left stalk.

Moreover, it still had an 8-speaker Sensus Connect High Performance audio system. And oh, there's an internet browser button too if you wanna go online, only when the car is engaged in park. The interface looks minimal and easy to read. The only thing that I hate it is the cluttered buttons, but that was typical Volvo. I bet the successor of this will have the large touchscreen like the new Volvos.

Frameless rear view mirror.

Nothing special at the back. Hmmm....

After checking out the car, let's go for a drive.

How does it drive for this typical Volvo S60?

Typical Volvo. Nah, just kidding. Driving the S60 T6 was way extraordinary compared to other C-segment continental cars. It didn't gave you a crazy sporty feel, or even an old man vibe like the competitors. It was just, balance, in between, and minimalistic like what it should be. The S60 T6 felt like a sports car, or, maybe like a TT with better rear seats. It accelerates like one, but it doesn't corners like one. Since the T6 had a 306 hp and 5700 Nm of torque, the way of feeling the power was really humongous than any average turbocharged 4-pots in the market.

Most importantly for it was the overall safety. Seeing the nameplate itself, you will immediately knows that this is one of the safest brand to own. It does have 4 wheel ABS brakes, electronic brake distribution, traction control, cross-traffic alert, Auto Emergency Braking system, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Pedestrian and Cyclist detection as standard. With the additional Lane Keeping Aid and Volvo Park Assist Pilot, this makes the S60 more safer to drive.

The Lane Keeping Aid did help me when I drive on the highway. If I'm leaving the lane unintendedly without giving the signal, the steering wheel immediately vibrates to warn me that I didn't give any signals.

The 8-speaker Sensus Connect High Performance audio system itself made a quality melodies around the cabin. There's no disturbance or any bad treble or vibrations on each door panel. Obviously since it's a Volvo. You don't really get this problem that much.

Final Verdict

The Volvo S60 T6 was one of the safest and the minimalist in the C-segment luxury market.  You get all the power that you've wanted like a sports car and better safety features that make this car as strong as a tank. Wanna extend your life and your family? You probably should get this! The S60 T6 only costs RM 280,888 with insurance.
